Smartphones are the in thing for a lot of people nowadays. Whenever Apple, T-Mobile, Nokia and other mobile phone manufacturers introduce a new version of a smartphone already in the market, individuals go crazy, all wanting to have it, thanks to the flurry of publicity that has been generated in the media. What is more interesting is that when a specific smartphone model gets "upgraded" or "replaced" by manufacturers just several months after being introduced in the market.

There are lots of reasons why everybody wants to have a smartphone. Compared to typical mobile phones, smartphones offer a lot of features that are never thought possible. Through the use of a smartphone, one can browse through the Internet, send fax, watch a movie, play interactive games and chat with friends through instant messengers.

Smartphones have also become the "bread and butter" of technology- and telecommunications-related companies. For instance, Apple derived much of its income from the sale of the iPhone, which is a big hit among American and foreign mobile phone users. Software developers are also profiting heavily on the popularity of smartphones in such a way that more smartphones on sale means more smartphone software that they could sell alongside the units.

Telecommunications companies are, perhaps, the biggest beneficiaries of the smartphone fad. Because of the popularity of the likes of the Sidekick and the iPhone, telcos earn a lot on unit orders alone. Aside from the sale of units, telcos also derive income from downloads and software sales that smartphone users get to make them work.

Although popular with users, smartphones are mostly locked to a specific telecommunications carrier. This is the reason why people came up with ways on how to unlock them. The best-known of these unlocking methods could be the Sidekick LX code, which unlocks T-Mobile’s Sidekick smartphone.

Smartphones such as the iPhone and the Sidekick may seem to be mere fads to some, but this is a testament on how much technology has changed and influenced the landscape. Telecommunications technology is improving over the years, thanks to changing needs and wants of consumers. In years to come, smartphones might be overshadowed by a newer type of mobile phone, causing a new fad to be generated among the tech-savvy, mobile phone using crowd.
